National Read a Book Day
Every year, 6 September is celebrated as National Read a Book Day which is a day dedicated to encouraging people to slow down and find enjoyment in reading.
Reading has many benefits, such as improving mood, encouraging empathy, increasing general knowledge, and also, reduces screen time. In the modern world where people are so easily accessible through their mobile phones, it is important to take time to ‘switch off’ and take part in activities which are purely for our own benefit.
However, it is unfortunately the case that the number of people who do read regularly has decreased in recent years. In the 2024 report titled ‘The State of the Nation’s Adult Reading’, it was found that 50% of all adults in the UK do not regularly read in their downtime, which is down from 58% as recorded in 2015. In light of this, we believe that National Read a Book Day is the perfect time to take initiative and bring back some of the joy of reading.
Here are some ways that you can celebrate this year’s National Read a Book Day: –
- Read a book;
- Share your current reading list or your favourite books;
- Attend a book club or take part in a reading challenge;
- Create your own tips on how to make more time for reading;
- Post reviews online of any books you have read recently;
- Simply set your own goals to read more in 2024.
By recognising the importance of National Read a Book Day, we can celebrate the value of reading and commit to making it a more prominent part of our daily lives. This allows us to honour the tradition of storytelling and the endless possibilities that reading can offer.
