Lent/Ramadan
This year offers a powerful and symbolic moment: the beginning of Lent and the start of Ramadan fall on the same day.
For Christians around the world, Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, this year on 18 February, and consists of a 40-day period of prayer, fasting, and reflection leading to
Easter. For Muslims, Ramadan marks a sacred month of fasting from dawn to sunset, prayer, discipline, and spiritual renewal.
While rooted in different faith traditions, both seasons share striking similarities. Both religions ask us to slow down in a world that constantly speeds up. They invite
people to examine habits, recalibrate priorities, and practice restraint, not as a punishment, but as a purpose. Fasting becomes more than abstaining from food; it
becomes a discipline of awareness. It reminds us that consumption does not equal fulfilment.
- Across offices, job sites, hospitals, schools and boardrooms, colleagues may be:
- Waking before sunrise to eat and pray
- Skipping lunchtime meetings
- Attending evening services
- Reflecting more deeply on personal and professional conduct
For leaders and organisations, this overlap is also an opportunity. It’s a chance to demonstrate cultural awareness, respect diverse religious observances, and create inclusive spaces where people can honour their commitments without compromise.
Moments like this don’t blur our differences, they highlight our common ground. Different traditions. Shared discipline. Collective reflection. Sometimes the calendar brings us closer than we realise and a reminder that in a divided world, millions choosing reflection, generosity, and discipline at the same time is something worth noticing and worth honouring.
