Why recognition of allergies is more important than ever.
Each year, allergy awareness week shines a spotlight on a health issue that affects millions
of people, yet it often goes unnoticed until it’s too late or enough recognition isn’t given to
the severity of allergies and the impact it has on those it affects.
Whether it is a reaction to peanuts, gluten, pollen, pets or even medication, allergies can
life-altering and in severe cases life-threatening. This awareness week isn’t just about the
facts and figures but its about the people it affects. It is about making sure everyone
understands that allergies are serious, and that awareness can save lives or provide
someone with allergies that bit of comfort in knowing people understand the daily
difficulties they may face.
For those living with allergies, every meal, every outdoor stroll and every new environment
can come with hidden risks. Whilst some reactions might be mild, like itching and sneezing –
others can escalate quickly and may require immediate medical attention. Although there
may be the physical pain or discomfort that comes with allergies -what is often
misunderstood is the mental load that comes with managing allergies. Daily management of
allergies can be tiresome, whether that is reading labels religiously, asking about ingredients
at restaurants to even someone making remarks that can often appear mocking. It is all part
of an exhausting routine that many people must follow daily to stay safe.
Recognition, why does it matter? Well allergy awareness is more than knowledge, its about
action and empathy. Recognising and acknowledging allergies means creating environments
where people feel safe and supported. It means that environments should have proper
protocols and emergency medication on hand.
Just knowing the signs of an allergic reaction can save a life, and this emphasizes the
importance of making the relevant adjustments at home or even in the work place to avoid
these incidents becoming fatal.
What can we do?
You don’t have to have an allergy to support or acknowledge changes being made to help
provide allergy safe environments. Whether its advocating for clearer food labelling, or
simply checking in on someone who has an allergy prior to confirming plans, these small
acts can make a big difference.
Lets do more than just acknowledge allergies, lets recognise them and make the small
adjustments to help those affected live their lives fully without that consistent daily worry.
At Greens Solicitors, we consistently ensure any of our employees with allergies are catered
for so that we can collectively enjoy a worry-free environment. We ensure that all events
are inclusive of everyone so that we can truly work together in enjoying the moment rather
than making anyone’s day that little bit harder. We shall continue to support raising
awareness of allergies and encouraging those around us to do the same.
